Apprenticeships with AWE

There are a wide range of AWE Apprenticeship roles available in various different functions across the company’s four sites. The AWE Apprenticeship scheme has been training young people for more than 65 years.

AWE plays a crucial role in national defence and is also at the forefront of the UK nuclear deterrence programme. The organisation supports the UK’s Continuous At Sea Deterrence programme as well as the national nuclear security programme.

A team of world-renowned scientists, engineers and specialists undertake critical work, providing and maintaining warheads for Royal Navy submarines. This includes everything from design and manufacture, as well as in-service support and decommissioning.

Today, AWE is recognised as a centre of scientific, engineering and technological excellence, equipped with some of the most advanced research, design and production facilities in the world. Furthermore, AWE’s unique skills and capabilities mean the organisation is a world leader, providing support to UK Government with specialist national nuclear security, threat reduction and counter-terrorism solutions.

This involves identifying worldwide and UK-based nuclear threats – using cutting-edge scientific methods and instrumentation to assist with threat reduction and counter-terrorism. In particular, as part of an enhanced detection programme, AWE is working on an improved capability to detect special nuclear material at the UK’s borders.

AWE’s work also contributes to ensure non-proliferation and response to national nuclear situations. Furthermore, all work is undertaken in the utmost interests of national security and non-proliferation. While also ensuring no information is made available that could lead to the proliferation of nuclear weapons technology.

While in the field of nuclear forensics, AWE identifies the origin of materials and recovers traditional forensic information from crime scenes where exhibits have been contaminated with radioactive material. As a result, AWE’s nuclear threat reduction capability offers a stimulating and challenging working environment for self-motivated individuals who wish to make a real difference to the security of the UK.

Aldermaston
As the company’s headquarters, AWE’s Aldermaston site covers more than 750 acres. Once a wartime airfield, today Aldermaston is a centre of excellence housing advanced research, design and manufacturing facilities.

Burghfield
Formerly a munitions factory, AWE Burghfield is a 225 acre site where warheads are assembled and maintained while in service, and decommissioned when out of service. It is highly complex work that requires the expertise of everyone who works at Burghfield.

Blacknest
AWE Blacknest is also home to the Forensic Seismology department. Here AWE researches and develops techniques to distinguish seismic signals generated by underground nuclear explosions from those generated by earthquakes. Consequently, the forensic seismology work undertaken at Blacknest is pivotal to the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

Coulport
The Royal Naval Armament Depot at Coulport and Faslane manages strategic weapons services, bringing together complementary skills, experience and resources. In addition, a key role is to sustain and develop the existing expertise, safely and securely in support of the UK Government’s Continuous at Sea Deterrence policy.
