Apprenticeships with Cygnet TexKimp

Cygnet TexKimp offers Apprenticeships at its Cheshire base, where it designs and manufactures a range of textile and fibre products for the automotive and other industries.

The company manufactures specialist machinery to handle and process advanced materials for the global aerospace, automotive, wind energy and industrial markets. It is a leading authority in fibre handling and converting with over four decades of expertise and an extensive programme of collaborative R&D.

Founded in 1974, Cygnet TexKimp combine four decades of chemical and engineering expertise with a busy programme of continuing research and development. This enables the company to design, manufacture, install and service machines that address customers’ unique technical and commercial requirements and help them stay at the forefront of their markets.

Thanks to the skill and creativity of the Cygnet TexKimp engineering teams, chemists and design experts, many of the most successful technical fibre and fabric manufacturers in the world rely on the company’s solutions to create the highest quality performance materials for industries including automotive, aerospace, construction, military and marine.

Cygnet TexKimp produces a range of textile and fibre products for a range of different industries and applications, including:

  • Aerospace – structural components, non-structural components, thermoset prepregs
  • Automotive – multi-axis fabrics, 3D-weaving, polypropylene fibre processes, thermoplastic processes, structural and non-structural components
  • Industrial Sectors – wind, rail, marine CNG storage, sporting goods
  • Traditional Textiles
  • Geo-textiles – permeable / semi-permeable wovens and heat bonded fabrics
  • Tyre Cord – polyamide, polyester, viscose/rayon, high-modulus-low-shrinkage yarns
  • Emerging Material Markets – requiring special projects and bespoke design and manufacturing

In November 2017, Cygnet TexKimp won the UK Composites “Innovation of the Year Award”at the Advanced Engineering show at the NEC in Birmingham. Cygnet Texkimp won the award for its 3D Winder technology, which is the world’s first robotic 3D winding machine capable of making complex composite parts with non-linear axes and varying cross-sections.

The 3D Winder can quickly and precisely lay down multiple carbon fibre tows and can accurately follow complex curves and corners. It is capable of laying down high volumes of fibre at much faster deposition rates than similar technologies such as braiding and weaving. Multiple tows of up to 50,000 filaments each can be laid down at once and trials have shown it has the potential to wind an aircraft spar in a few minutes.

Its market potential is considerable because it responds to one of the biggest gaps in the composites market – how to create composite components cost-effectively in high volumes and at high speeds. As a result, it has clear value to add to the high-volume mainstream automotive and aerospace markets, where it can be used to manufacture a wide range of components including fuel pipes, cant rails, bumpers and wing spars.
