Dawson Shanahan is a specialist precision engineering company which offers Apprenticeships at its base in Welshpool, Wales. The company’s history spans over 70 years experience in precision engineering, starting out as a manufacturer of critical parts for anti-lock braking systems on Lancaster bombers during the Second World War.
Dawson Shanahan is the world’s leading specialist in precision cold forming and finishing in copper, aluminium and ferrous materials, and it provides a range of products and services for every sector of industry, from automotive and motorsports to aviation, power distribution, electronics and medical.
Since the company started in the 1930, it has been heavily involved in the automotive sector, in both high volume manufacturing and in the development of specialised components for motorsport, from F1 downwards. Since the 1960s, Dawson Shanahan has also been a regular sponsor of class winning motorcyclists, with one of the Company Directors regularly competing at the highest levels, culminating in a rostrum position at the world famous Isle of Man TT.
Dawson Shanahan’s expertise in precision cold forming and machining enables engine, chassis and drivetrain manufacturers, of both cars and commercial vehicles, to extract the maximum performance and efficiency from key components. The company offers a complete package of services, from design and prototyping, through low and high volume production, to project management and single source agreements to help minimise costs, reduce lead times and improve quality and reliability of supply.
For the Aviation industry, Dawson Shanahan produces parts for military and civilian aircraft and ground support equipment, with particular experience in manufacturing components for piston and jet engines, braking and undercarriage systems, flight surface controls and cabin environment devices.
In December 2017, the company further boosted its capabilities in cold forming by investing in a high-throughput Formax machine, taking the company’s investment in new machinery to £500,000 for the third year in a row. Additional investments have been made in the company’s turning, milling and grinding capabilities, as well as in metrology and cleaning systems.
Dawson Shanahan also has its own dedicated training school on-site, with an extensive range of machinery and equipment for Apprentices to learn the skills required for a future career as an engineer with the company.
