GB Railfreight is one of the rail freight industry’s great success stories. Launched in 1999, the company employs a team of over 750, with a turnover in excess of £120m. It is one of the fastest growing companies on the railway.
GB Railfreight’s administrative headquarters are in London. The company also has satellite locations all over England, Scotland and Wales, from Aberdeen to Cardiff and Plymouth to Peterborough.
GB Railfreight specialises in moving all kinds of freight across the UK rail network, including the following:
Automotive: transporting over 50,000 finished vehicles per annum across the UK. The company also plans to expand into transporting automotive components.
Biomass: one of only two freight companies that continuously move biomass on the railway. It has moved 2.5 million tonnes in the last 12 months. It is also the only freight company which delivers biomass by rail to power station generators.
Construction: hauling raw materials and finished goods including gypsum, aggregates, limestone, iron ore, sleepers, ballast and rails. The company moves materials into and away from locations all over country, using a range of box wagons, containers, tanks and hoppers.
Coal: providing efficient and timely coal haulage services across the UK. The company also operates coal trains out of some of the UK’s main locations, including Scotland and Port of Blyth.
Containers: carrying nearly a fifth of all containerised rail traffic to and from the Port of Felixstowe. There are daily services to Doncaster and Birmingham, as well as to the West Midlands and Manchester.
Infrastructure: delivering for Network Rail, operating infrastructure trains moving ballast, sleepers, rails and other materials. The company has a ten-year contract to supply engineering trains to deliver replacement rails, sleepers and ballast to possessions extensively across London Underground’s sub-surface railway including the Metropolitan and District lines.
Petrochemicals: transporting petrochemicals since March 2005, when the company won a contract with Petrochem Carless to move gas condensate in East Anglia and drilling mud oils to Scotland. Also has a contract with petroleum supplier Greenergy, the UKs leading supplier of petrol, biofuel and diesel. GBRf now runs up to three trains per week, hauling petroleum products from the North East to Inver Terminal at the Queen Alexandra Dock in Cardiff. These loads were previously moved via road.
Rail Services: offering a wide range of rail service solutions to its clients, primarily centred around the transportation of new build or refurbished rolling stock. Notable recent projects have included the movement of Siemens Rail Class 350 multiple units for London Midland and TransPennine Express from the continent to the UK. In addition, GB Railfreight has a long-term contract to move all of the new London Underground ’S-Stock’ trains from Bombardier’s works in Derby to London.
