Apprenticeships with General Dynamics
There are a range of General Dynamics Apprenticeship roles available at three different sites in the UK. General Dynamics Apprenticeship roles are available in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Maintenance Engineering and Engineering Support.
General Dynamics has been established in the UK for more than 50 years. The company employs more than 1,350 people across the UK, with 950 highly-skilled employees based in Merthyr Tydfil and Oakdale, South Wales. Of these, 550 are currently working on vehicle programmes, with the number set to rise to 700 by the end of 2018. In addition, General Dynamics has 275 highly-skilled employees in Hastings, East Sussex. Furthermore, the Company has established graduate and apprenticeship programmes, with the intake increasing each year.
General Dynamics currently provides the tactical communication system used by the UK Armed Forces, known as Bowman. In 2017, the Company secured a £330 million contract to design and develop the next-generation tactical communication and information system. This will assist the Army to plan, deploy, manage and monitor communications and information for a range of operations. Furthermore, General Dynamics designed and developed AJAX, the future of Armoured Fighting Vehicles for the British Army.
The company is a leading supplier to the UK MoD in three key areas: armoured fighting vehicles, avionic systems and tactical communications:
- Armoured fighting vehicles are manufactured across two sites in South Wales: Merthyr Tydfil and Oakdale.
- Avionic Systems for Eurofighter Typhoon, Tornado, AgustaWestland and Wildcat platforms are manufactured in Hastings, East Sussex.
- Tactical communications, including Bowman, the British Army’s Tactical Communication Information System, are developed in Oakdale, South Wales.
This site was previously a disused forklift truck factory, until General Dynamics acquired it in 2015. Following significant investment, the site is now a specialist engineering hub for armoured vehicles. In addition to the 250 jobs created at the Merthyr Tydfil facility, the AJAX build programme currently sustains an additional 300 jobs at General Dynamics in nearby Oakdale. It also supports a further 3,600 jobs at more than 230 companies across the UK supply chain.
The new industrial capability at Merthyr Tydfil opens up exciting new possibilities for General Dynamics in the UK in the years ahead. For example, the company can quickly deliver PIRANHA 5 vehicles to the British Army to meet the planned Initial Operating Capability from an existing production line. Production will eventually transfer to Merthyr Tydfil, creating further jobs at the facility and additional significant employment right across the extensive UK supply chain.
In addition to the General Dynamics Apprenticeship roles summarised here, the company also offers a range of Graduate Jobs:
