Apprenticeships with Great Western Railway

There are a range of GWR Apprenticeship roles available in a variety of functions across the business. GWR Apprenticeship roles are based in the South West, South East and London, along the main GWR rail routes.

The Great Western Railway is one of the most iconic rail routes in the UK, having originally been designed and engineered by the legendary Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The primary route from London to Bristol was an engineering marvel when it was first designed in the early 1800s. This is because Brunel ensured the railway line stayed as close to a constant level as possible along the whole route.

To achieve this, Brunel had to design and engineer several tunnels and bridges, but the result was that the line was one of the fastest when it was first launched. Even today, the GWR line continues to set the standard in rail travel. The GWR routes are benefiting from more than £7.5 billion spent on electrifying routes from London to Oxford, Bristol, and Newbury, station improvements, and track upgrades. This modernisation programme, together with GWR’s new trains, will increase capacity, and shorten journey times.

Today, the Great Western Railway is one of the largest train companies in Britain, carrying more than 100 million customers a year. GWR routes cover Devon and Cornwall, Bristol and South Wales, London, and large parts of Southern England. The company also operates a Night Riviera service which connects London and the West. In addition, GWR operates direct links to Heathrow and Gatwick to make airport travel easy.

GWR’s new Intercity Express Trains

As part of the biggest upgrade on the Great Western Railway, the size of the GWR high-speed fleet is doubling. 93 new Intercity Express Trains will replace existing services by the end of 2019. The first trains will appear on routes to Bristol, South Wales, and the Cotswolds.

These new trains provide greater comfort and space, with 20% more seats, all ergonomically designed, with greater legroom. They also feature air-conditioning in all areas, and window blinds throughout. And, importantly, more tables, a plug socket for everyone. There is also on-board Wi-Fi throughout the train.

GWR’s new Intercity Express Trains also feature improved customer information, with LED information screens, inside and outside the train. A digital reservation system also lets you see at a glance whether a seat is booked or not.

These trains also feature better storage space, with deeper overhead racks, extra floor storage, and more stacks at the ends of carriages. They also have bike spaces in dedicated carriages, with ceiling-mounted hooks to keep things safe.

GWR’s new Electrostar trains

GWR’s new, longer electric trains now run from London Paddington to Maidenhead, Reading and Didcot Parkway. This has increased capacity in the Thames Valley by over 35%. The new Electrostar trains feature air-conditioning, wider tables, reading lights, at-seat power sockets and complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the train. Furthermore, as they are run on the new electrified lines, GWR’s Electrostar trains keep emissions and noise pollution to an absolute minimum.
