Apprenticeships with Johnston Sweepers

Johnston Sweepers operates an Engineering Apprenticeship Scheme at its manufacturing facility in Dorking.

Each year, the company takes on a new group of school leavers, training and supporting them in all aspects of engineering through to their BTECH and NVQ qualifications in Welding, Fabrication, Mechanical Engineering and Purchasing and Logistics. Johnston Sweepers takes on around 8 Apprentices each year, and at any one time has around 20 Apprentices at various stages of their three or four year training.

A dedicated Apprenticeship Scheme Coordinator provides mentoring and support for Apprentices during their training, liaising with the colleges and administering the scheme.  The Coordinator also identifies further career development potential among the Apprentices and many go on to supervisory and management roles within the company.

The company’s production site in Dorking manufactures a wide range of municipal and contractor cleansing vehicles from the 4 tonnes GVM Compact series to chassis mounted units in excess of 18 tonnes GVM. State-of-the-art engineering design facilities and manufacturing techniques ensure that the product range continues to be an industry quality leader.

Johnston Sweepers employs more than 450 staff in a wide range of skills and disciplines, including welding, painting, fitting, laser operation, electrics and electronics, in addition to administration staff and sales, technical and customer service personnel. In addition to its Dorking Headquarters and manufacturing facility, Johnston Sweepers also has 3 Service Centres nationwide, located in Edinburgh, Leeds and Bristol.

In addition to road sweepers, Johnston Sweepers also manufactures a range of truck-mounted sweeping equipment, as well as equipment for snow-ploughing and salt-spreading for winter road maintenance, and a range of specialise equipment for airport vehicles.

Education Requirements for Johnston Sweepers

To apply for an Apprenticeship with Johnston Sweepers, candidates must have a strong interest in engineering and must be able to demonstrate the following qualifications:

  • 3 GCSEs Grade C or above in Maths, English and a Science

However, for school leavers who do not meet the entry criteria for the Apprenticeship Scheme, Johnston Sweepers also take on Trainees and fund and support them through their NVQ qualifications.
