Scottish Water is a publicly owned company, which answers to the Scottish Parliament and the people of Scotland. The company is the sole provider of water and waste water services to an area of over 30,000 square miles. This is the equivalent to one-third of the area of Britain. However, because Scotland has a longer coastline – over 6,800 miles – and a small and relatively dispersed population, this actually requires a large number of small water and waste water treatment works. Therefore, Scottish Water is actually the fourth largest water and waste water services provider in the UK.
The company provides 1.34 billion litres of drinking water every day to 5 million customers in 2.49 million households across Scotland. It also takes away more than 900 million litres of waste water, which treated before it is returned to the rivers and seas.
Scottish Water’s head office is in Dunfermline with principal offices in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Stepps and Inverness. The company employs almost 3,400 people, all across Scotland.
In addition to the Scottish Water Apprenticeships available for those who have completed their secondary school studies, the company also offers a range of work experience opportunities.
Scottish Water run a schools work experience programme which provides educational and experiential work placements for young people. Work placement students in Scottish Water will be asked to carry out tasks much as an employee would, but with the emphasis on learning about the job and the company. The strategy is to promote the key skills that Scotland needs to shape the future by encouraging young people on placements to develop skills for learning, skills for life and skills for work.
Scottish Water has more than 60 trained coaches at 11 office locations who can support educational placements. Coaches are passionate about developing and supporting young people within this programme and are enthusiastic about achieving Scottish Water’s Vision: “Trusted to care for the water on which Scotland depends”.
