Apprenticeships with Toyota Material Handling
You can apply for a Toyota Material Handling Apprenticeship with both the UK Head Office and the brand’s UK Dealer Network. The company is the world’s No1 supplier of forklifts and warehouse equipment. The UK branch manages sales and service for the brand, from its head office in Slough, Berkshire.
The Dealer Network offers service, parts, rental and operator training. There are Dealers all across the UK, including Dealers in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This is where at least 600 fully trained Service Technicians work on the complete range of Toyota forklifts. 40 technicians are also trained to service and repair hand pallet trucks. Some roles are based in the field, providing service and repair on site for clients at their place of business.
The company has a target response time of no more than 4 hours. Services also include tyre fitting or battery care, with a range of service plans to help clients budget for the running costs of their fleet. Toyota also offer service cover for all of its products with one contract, as well as an out of hours service and on-site support where needed.
Toyota Material Handling Apprenticeship:
The Service Technician programme takes 3 years to complete. During your Toyota Material Handling Apprenticeship, you will learn how to inspect, maintain, service and repair the full Toyota product range. This includes forklifts and hand pallet trucks, as well as pickers and tow tractors. Tow tractors can be rider or stand-on, and can tow up to 49 tonnes. Its high reach trucks can lift heavy loads in warehouses up to 13m in height.
As well as engineering and mechanical skills, you will also learn how to work on hydraulic systems. You will rotate around key areas of the Dealer and will have a mentor to help develop your skills. The Toyota Material Handling Apprenticeship programme includes on the job training, as well as at a local college.
You will also learn how to maintain the latest automated handling systems, as well as new lithium ion and fuel cell systems. Some of these are designed to be explosion proof, to ensure safety in places where an ignition source would be a danger. There are also special trucks which can withstand the salty climates of the fish trade.
It also has a range of trucks which can work in -35C for cold storage uses. There are also simple automated guided vehicles (AGVs) which are guided by circuits buried in the workshop floor and can tow loads up to 500kg.
