In 2019, British Airways launched a new Cabin Crew Apprenticeship programme as part of their plans to recruit more than 2,000 Cabin Crew. This is a great opportunity to follow a structured training programme which can lead to an exciting career in aviation. What is a Cabin Crew Apprenticeship?
A Cabin Crew Apprenticeship is a structured training programme which can take up to 1 year to complete. You will be a full-time employee and receive an apprenticeship wage, depending on your age. However, one of the great advantages of the Cabin Crew Apprenticeship is that your employer will pay for all your training costs. This means, unlike going to University, you won’t be burdened by huge students loans which take years to pay back.
During your training period, you will learn a range of new skills which will be critical for maintaining safety. There are three basic elements to a Cabin Crew Apprenticeship:
- Flight Operations. In this module, you will learn how to get passengers on board a plane efficiently and safely. You will also liaise with other ground crew to ensure the plane is properly cleaned and stocked before departure. Additional training is provided on in-flight duties to ensure the highest level of safety and customer satisfaction.
- Organisation and Commercial. In this module, you will learn about issues relating to Compliance and Legislation, Health and Safety, as well as Organisation.
- Behaviours. In this module, you will learn how to behave when carrying out various duties required of a Cabin Crew team member. This includes learning how to work as part of a team, while also maintaining a safe environment for passengers and colleagues.
Now let’s take a look at the Cabin Crew Apprenticeship schemes that are offered by three different airlines in the UK.
British Airways Cabin Crew Apprenticeship
British Airways introduced its new Cabin Crew Apprenticeship in March 2019. The company plans to recruit more than 2,000 cabin crew, with more than 2,500 applying for these roles. New recruits receive training at British Airways’ world-class Global Learning Academy which is a registered “Employer Provider” of apprenticeships. British Airways offers Cabin Crew Apprenticeship roles at both London Heathrow and London Gatwick airports. These are on BA’s “Mixed Fleet”, a mixture of long and short haul flights to destinations all across the world.
As of 2019, you can expect to earn a starting salary of around £15,000 per year. This could increase to between £23,000 and £28,000 per year once you are fully-qualified. You could also receive additional bonuses for achieving your performance targets. In addition, there are also commissions for in-flight retail sales. You will receive 30 days paid holiday, as well as a range of other travel concessions and employee benefits.

easyjet Cabin Crew Apprenticeship
easyjet was one of the first airlines to offer a Cabin Crew Apprenticeship in the UK. The company flies from several London airports, including Luton, Gatwick and Stansted, to cities all across the UK and Europe. In fact, easyjet has a fleet of more than 300 aircraft which fly to over 1000 routes in 33 countries. The airline also has around 3,000 pilots and 7,000 cabin crew members. easyjet is one of the UK’s most recognisable airlines, with its distinctive orange livery and “easyjet” branding on each plane. The brand is also Europe’s leading short-haul airline, flying to over 150 airports.
The easyjet Cabin Crew Apprenticeship scheme takes 1 year to complete and leads to a Level 3 Apprenticeship. On-the-job training is provided at easyjet’s own training academies, at either London Luton or London Gatwick airports. You will receive a competitive salary, with additional payments per flight. Cabin Crew also receive 10% commission on all retail sales, shared between all team members on the flight. The application process takes place during the first half of the year, with assessments during August. Roles start in January each year.

Virgin Atlantic Cabin Crew Apprenticeship
Virgin Atlantic was founded by Sir Richard Branson and first started flying in 1984. The company’s long haul fleet flies to major destinations all across the USA, as well as cities in South America, Africa, India and China. It is well-known for offering a competitive service to the more established airlines while also providing a very customer-service approach.
Virgin Atlantic launched their Cabin Crew Apprenticeship scheme in 2019. The training programme takes 14 months to complete, and you will need at least to be at least 18 months old to apply. Candidates should have at least GCSEs passes in English and Maths, as well as a willingness to learn new skills. You should also be able to swim 25m unaided and tread water. However, if you cannot yet swim, there is plenty of time to learn before you being your training.
