Aston University in Birmingham offers a range of Engineering and Design degrees, at both Undergraduate and Graduate level. The programmes introduce core engineering science combined with  a range of practical projects. This ensures Aston University degrees are highly integrated and relevant to industry.

Mechanical Engineering

Degree programmes are driven by the demands of industry to produce graduates with extremely strong engineering and scientific skills. Graduates will also develop strong skills in project management, team work and commercial awareness.

BEng degrees are either a 3-year full-time or 4-year sandwich programme incorporating a year of relevant professional experience. The first year of the programme encompasses a broad study of the fundamental disciplines of mechanical engineering. This includes classes in engineering science and mathematics, as well as integrated projects to embed the learning in practical settings. In the second year, the focus shifts from developing your basic skills to preparing you to become a professional engineer. Your final year features a major project, involving design, experimental or analytical work. You can also tailor the final year project to suit your own interests.

The University’s flexible degree structure allows students to transfer between Mechanical and ElectroMechanical and Design Engineering programmes after the first year. You can also transfer between full-time and placement programmes up to the end of second year. Students who perform well on the BEng in Mechanical Engineering programme can also transfer to the equivalent MEng.

Transport Product Design

The School of Engineering and Applied Science also teaches the Transport Product Design course. All sectors of design, development, production and business value the knowledge, skills and ideas of creative product design graduates from Aston University. Consequently, the University’s degree programmes are project-driven and include creative thinking and design visualisation. The courses also include studies in engineering science, materials and manufacturing and the management of innovation.

In the first year, you will gain a grounding in the principles of Product Design together with flexibility to change streams at the end of the first year to reflect your own design interests. In the second and final year, you will experience a common core of five design modules to support your design projects that integrate your design specialism with the core aspects of Product Design.
