Brunel University London

The College of Engineering, Design & Physical Sciences at Brunel University London is one of the largest Colleges of its type in the UK, with close to 5000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The College offers courses in the following areas:

  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Design
  • Electronic and Computer Engineering
  • Flood and Coastal Engineering
  • Mathematics
  • Mechanical Engineering

The Mechanical Engineering division is home to the following subject areas:

  • Aerospace and Aviation Engineering
  • Motorsport and Automotive Engineering
  • Building Services and Energy Studies

Mechanical Engineers design, test and develop every kind of machine, from supersonic fighter jets and super cars to bicycles and toasters. They also contribute to the design of other products such as mobile phones, computers and even windows and doors. Many mechanical engineers specialize in areas such as aerospace, automotive, transportation, manufacturing, and air conditioning. Others cross over into other disciplines, working on everything from artificial organs to the expanding field of healthcare. Some also use their mechanical engineering degree as preparation for the practice of finance and law.

Mechanical engineers work in the aerospace, automotive, chemical, computer, telecommunication, and power generation industries. Mechanical engineers are also found in any manufacturing industry. In fact, every product or service has probably been touched in some way by a mechanical engineer.

Another reason to study at Brunel University is that Mechanical Engineering is the most established subject. It is one of very few subjects which provides the broad engineering education required for a career in Engineering. Hence, Brunel University is the ideal place to gain a qualification in mechanical, aerospace, automotive/motorsport engineering, or even building service engineering. As a result, students can choose from a range of degree programmes even after they have completed their first year study.

Students obtain a thorough understanding of engineering principles coupled with excellent practical and personal transferable skills. The laboratory facilities are extensive, modern and well-equipped. Students have access to a dedicated aerospace/aviation laboratory and flight simulator, as well as a professionally designed Motorsport workshop. The University also boasts a modern material/structure testing laboratory, and state-of-art IC engine laboratories.

The College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences hold their annual Brunel Engineers Showcase in May. The projects exhibited in the Brunel Engineers showcase demonstrate the talent and ability of students to generate ideas and concepts, as well as the ability to apply design principles which drive innovation and wealth creation.

Brunel University London’s motorsport department also has its own racing team, Brunel Racing. The team has competed in the TT Zero electric motorcycle race on the Isle of Man.
