The vision of Derby UTC is to create a positive impact on the lives of students, the local communities, and the engineering and emerging technology-based industries across Derby, Derbyshire and the East Midlands. Derby UTC’s ambition is to become a national centre of excellence for Engineering education and training. The academy focuses on Advanced Manufacturing, Product Design, Materials Science, Advanced Composites and Sustainability in Engineering.
With its world-leading strengths in aerospace, rail, automotive, nuclear and advanced engineering – not to mention its flourishing professional service and creative industries – Derby is perfectly placed to break new ground in manufacturing education. Forward-thinking and confident, Derby already has one of the most highly skilled workforces in the country.
The Derby UTC will become an influential player in Derby’s future economic prosperity by investing in the skills of young people and ensuring a talent pipeline for the city’s key employment sectors.
Derby UTC is a specially designed college to ensure that the students learn in a twenty-first century environment. The engineering workshop at Derby UTC has the latest in CAD machines, together with milling machines, lathes and welding bays. The prototype room has eight 3D printers, routers, and laser cutters linked directly to a CAD computer room with 21 specialist PCs.
To ensure that the students who leave Derby UTC are prepared for the ever changing technical workplace, the UTC has a range of high specification equipment for the students to use. The academy worked closely with Rolls-Royce and Toyota to ensure that the machinery was of equivalent standard to the equipment those companies use with their apprentices, and the college works closely with its sponsor and partner companies to ensure that the Derby UTC continues to evolve to meet the needs of our students and local employers.
