East London UTC

The East London UTC is for 14-19 year olds in East London where students can pursue technical qualifications in product design, engineering and technology as part of their GCSE and A Level curriculum.

The UTC is an Academy for Design and Engineering and it is partnered with leading businesses and organisations who specialise in these technical fields. Along with University College London (UCL), East London UTC’s main sponsor, they help to develop Elutec’s exciting curriculum, which includes practical employer and university-led projects and work experience programmes, as well as traditional classroom based learning for more academic subjects like English.

East London UTC provides a rounded technical, practical and academic educational experience that helps students develop the expertise they need to move on to an apprenticeship or university and lead successful careers in future. Elutec focusses particularly on engineering, product design and technology because these are areas where there are currently skills gaps in London and the South East and there is a need for skilled technicians.

What is unique about the curriculum at East London UTC is that the core curriculum is not taught in isolation. This means every lesson is linked to the engineering project they are completing. For example, students working on an engineering project designing and making pistons and fuel pumps for an engine will also investigate what the best materials for those components are – this allows them to simultaneously study materials in chemistry, investigating the properties of various metals to help them to make an informed choice in their engineering project.

In addition to the academic curriculum, students will complete a range of workshop sessions where they will develop mechanical engineering skills with a wide range of equipment from hand tools through to lathes and turret mills. As they develop each skill they will build up evidence for their technical log, an important document that they will take with them into higher education or industry.

Students will also undertake a week of work experience each year which will further develop their employment skills.

East London UTC Sixth Form students follow a level 3 programme and will choose either the academic pathway consisting of A level subjects or the vocational pathway consisting of either a three A level equivalent BTEC Extended Diploma in engineering or a two A level equivalent BTEC Diploma in engineering plus a single A level equivalent BTEC in IT. Each student will also take the AS level EPQ qualification as a preparation for UCAS and working in industry.

Sixth Form students are allocated a tutor who will meet with them daily, both as part of the tutor group and individually. The tutor will guide students through their Sixth Form years by supporting their learning, helping them to cope with the pressures of studying at this level, and providing them with information, advice and guidance in terms of their next steps in achieving their ambitions, whether that be through an apprenticeship, other employment with training, or university.
