Leigh UTC (Dartford)
Leigh UTC offers 14–19 year olds near Dartford the opportunity to study a technical based programme of learning alongside core GCSE and A-Level subjects. The UTC specialises in providing an education for young people in Computer Science, Engineering and Manufacturing. The mission of The Leigh UTC is to develop curious, academically-skilled young people who aspire to be principled, compassionate learners.
Students at Leigh UTC work on real-world projects and develop skills by taking part in work experience placements offered by employer partners. During their time at the UTC, students develop skills that are transferable to the workplace and open up new pathways to employment. Students are also expected to complete 40 days of work experience during Years 10 and 11, and 80 days of work experience during Sixth Form – giving students an outstanding opportunity to experience working with different companies, as well as building networks for future employment.
The school runs a business mentoring programme for its students to develop self-confidence, self-awareness, self-esteem and improve progress in their academic studies, raise their aspirations of their own academic potential, future career and employment opportunities.
Students at The Leigh UTC will also be expectede to complete and Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) AS. This is a Level 3 course which is taken alongside ‘A’ levels. Students are required to complete a project based on a research topic of their choice. It can be related to a subject outside of the current area of study. The project can be in the form of an essay or report, or an artefact, product or research dissertation (backed up with paperwork). An EPQ will help develop a useful range of extra study skills, helping students prepare for the demands of university work. It is valued amongst higher education institutions as it demonstrates a dedication to independent learning, and it contributes towards entry requirements at many universities.
The Leigh UTC is managed by the Leigh Academies Trust, and it plans to open an “Inspiration Academy” on the site in March 2018. This will be a dedicated facility for students at The Leigh UTC to maximise opportunities available through the rapid growth of technological innovations. Inspiration Academy students will be expected to be competent mathematicians and writers, who can research, investigate questions and express themselves confidently as they prepare their next steps into successful career pathways.
