Automotive Engineering
The Automotive courses at Loughborough were the first such courses in the UK. As a result, they have established a national and international reputation for the quality of the courses and the graduates produced. The courses are also unique because they are run in an Automotive Department by academics working with the Automotive Industry.

Both the MEng and BEng courses allow you to acquire a firm foundation in engineering science. This course focuses on automobile design, development and manufacture, in addition to considerable emphasis on the use of modern analytical and Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) methods.

The strong Automotive focus continues throughout the courses with the continuation of vehicle design ultimately leading to the complete design of a vehicle, as well as the introduction of a broad range of Automotive modules. Both courses are designed to develop engineers with strong analytical, modelling, experimental and design ability, but also with excellent communication and team working skills.

MIRA vehicle test week
Both courses include a week of vehicle testing at the MIRA proving ground, an experience which is unique to Loughborough. It provides students with the opportunity to test the correlation of actual vehicle behaviour with simulation models. The tests include: handling dynamics, straight-line performance, braking, noise and vibration, as well as a vehicle aerodynamics study in the full-scale wind tunnel.

Formula Student car
The Department also supports a student-led team to design, test and race a new Formula Student car each year. As a result, all students can get involved and in the MEng final year a group project focuses on the design, analysis and building of the Formula Student car.

Automotive Materials
This degree course combines the core elements of materials engineering with specific training of relevance to the automotive (vehicle and transport) industries. The course is backed by all sectors of the automotive and transport industries. Consequently, this is the definitive course to prepare you for a career in an important industrial world market.

Furthermore, the course utilises the resources and expertise for which Loughborough University is a Centre of Excellence. The course is recognised as such by BAE Systems, Jaguar Land Rover, Ford Motor Company, and Rolls-Royce, as well as by national research and education leaders in materials and automotive engineering. It offers a special blend of materials engineering knowledge linked to an appreciation of vehicle as well as engine design.

Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering is one of the broadest of the engineering disciplines and will offer you a wide choice of options in industry. A modern mechanical engineering degree is a blend of traditional disciplines such as stress analysis, dynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics, with contemporary subjects such as mechatronics, laser materials processing, healthcare engineering and the range of techniques known collectively as computer aided engineering (CAE).

Product Design and Technology
The suite of Design programmes at the Loughborough Design School equip students with skills and understanding in the effective development and communication of design ideas, the ergonomics of usability and interaction, product styling, three-dimensional designing, as well as the production and use of prototypes as a key part of design practice.

Furthermore, the Product Design and Technology BSc course concerns itself with the development of skills and ability in the development and communication of ideas, interaction, product styling, three dimensional design, materials, ergonomics, the techniques of planning and costings, processes and the production of prototypes and finished artefacts. In addition, the course takes a technologically innovative approach to the design and creation of beautiful, ingenious, functionally viable products.
