Plymouth University’s School of Engineering is a friendly and exciting place to study. Researchers at Plymouth University have been well known in the fields of structures, materials, and coastal engineering for many years.

Furthermore, since the opening of the University’s £19m Marine Building in 2012, it has quickly become established as one of the leading centres for marine renewable energy research and testing. The new facility provides access to excellent facilities that include the world-class Coastal, Ocean and Sediment Transport Laboratory.

Courses within the school cover three main subject areas: civil and coastal engineering, mechanical, marine and materials engineering and navigation and maritime science.

Mechanical Engineering

Build a solid foundation in the principles of mechanical engineering, starting with an exciting interdisciplinary module set up with funding from the Royal Academy of Engineering. Plymouth University’s Mechanical Engineering degree is accredited by the Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE). During the course, you will engage in experimental work in excellent laboratories and workshops. You will also benefit from an optional 48 week paid work placement in your 3rd year. This placement may lead to sponsorship and future employment opportunities.

In Year 1, you will acquire a sound foundation in design, mechanics, materials, electrical principles, thermo-fluids, mathematics and business, learning by active involvement in real engineering problems. Year 2 consists of modules covering materials and structures, integrated through the central design theme, providing a holistic approach to mechanical engineering. In addition to core subjects like thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and quality management, you will also study business, mathematics and control.

In your final year, you will specialise in either thermal and fluid engineering, or control and intelligent systems. Subjects covered include manufacturing, failure mechanisms and mechanics, quality management and statistics, and practise design and computer-aided engineering. You will also research a topic of interest for your individual project.

Mechanical Engineering with Composites

Advanced lightweight and corrosion-resistant composites are increasingly the first choice for high performance aircraft, cars and boats. Be at the forefront with a course unique in the UK, which provides you with a grounding in mechanical engineering, and design and manufacturing skills in advanced composites materials. You will join a course with excellent employment prospects, with 90 per cent of Plymouth University graduates going into work or further study.

During the course, you will develop a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles and materials science. You will benefit from working on industrially relevant problems within composite materials and design of composite structures. There is also the option to take a 48 week paid work placement during your 3rd year.

In Year 1, you’ll acquire a sound foundation in design, mechanics, materials, electrical principles, thermo-fluids, mathematics and business, learning by actively engaging with real engineering problems. Year 2 expands on your knowledge of composite materials in preparation for specialist modules in the final year. The central role of design is used to integrate the learning from other modules on this course, such as structures and materials. You will also study modules on thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, business dynamics, mathematics and control and quality management.

In Year 3, you are strongly encouraged to do a year’s work placement to gain valuable paid professional experience. Plymouth University will support you to find a placement that is right for you. Previous students have worked for a variety of companies from BMW Mini, Bentley, Babcock Marine to NASA. A successful placement could lead to sponsorship in your final year, an industrially relevant final year project, and opportunities for future employment.

In your final year, you will specialise in composites design, engineering and manufacture. You will undertake an integrating group design project. Additional modules of study include statistics and quality management. You will also develop your knowledge and skills through an in-depth project on a topic of your choice.

Advanced Engineering Design

This new engineering masters has been developed specifically for graduate engineers. Build your skills, knowledge and understanding of engineering design practice, modern design tools, and advanced engineering technologies. Advance your professional competency and readiness to tackle complex engineering challenges, while also fulfilling the educational requirements of the Chartered Engineer Standard (CEng).
