As a result, you will develop keen computing skills to bring innovative product designs to life.

Furthermore, on this course you will get a feel for your designs using the University of Portsmouth’s sophisticated computer software and rapid prototyping equipment. In addition to working on real-life projects through links with industry and various design centres, students can also elect to do a paid work placement, either in the UK or overseas.

Innovation Engineering

The Innovation Engineering course at the University of Portsmouth is a leading-edge, creative, multi-disciplinary course that involves experimentation, design, engineering and enterprise activities. The course gives you the opportunity to work across the fields of mechanical, electronic, design and materials engineering. It also enhances your communication, entrepreneurial and leadership skills, enabling you to solve real-world problems that have an impact on society.

Teaching and learning is based around projects, which are research and industry based or speculative to inspire you about solving some of the key global challenges that face our society. There will also be opportunities for industry collaborations and access to a network of world-leading experts and scientists working in nanotechnology, robotics, new materials and sustainable energy.

Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering

If you want to study a course where you’ll be designing, developing, manufacturing, installing, and operating, this course could be ideal. On this course you will create your own designs in the University of Portsmouth’s manufacturing workshops. Students are also expected to be involved in the University’s Formula Student team. There is also the opportunity to do a paid work placement, either in the UK or overseas.

This course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) for academic exemption leading to eventual Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with further study. It puts you in an excellent position to start a career as a professional engineer.

Petroleum Engineering

This course gives you a broad ranging knowledge of all the phases involved in finding (exploration), drilling and extracting oil. Consequently, on this course you will carry out fieldwork on one of the University of Portsmouth’s many UK field trips to geological sites. Students will also use state-of-the-art geological and geotechnic labs for practical work. There is also the opportunity to do a paid work placement, either in the UK or overseas.

Product Design and Innovation

From the humble can opener to the bagless vacuum cleaner, we are surrounded by products that we need for modern-day living. We take so many of these devices for granted, but have you ever stopped to think about how clever some product designs really are? If you have, you will appreciate that there is also huge scope for being radically creative – to design faster, easier and at minimum cost.

Furthermore, on this course you will use the University of Portsmouth’s sophisticated computer software and rapid prototyping equipment. In addition to working on real-life projects through links with industry and various design centres, students can also elect to do a paid work placement, either in the UK or overseas.
