UTC Oxford

The UTC Oxford is based in Didcot, near an expanding cluster of science and engineering employers. The aim of UTC Oxford is to deliver Science and Engineering excellence for 14-19 year olds across the region, with an exciting and unique learning experience to help prepare students for a specialist careers in Science and Engineering.

The UTC Oxford is committed to helping students gain the qualifications and experience that future employers are looking for. The curriculum combines core academic subjects with the opportunity to study and gain practical experience in specialist areas of Science and Engineering. From day one, students are engaged in solving genuine problems using industry specialist equipment, which gives them a headstart in their chosen careers.

UTC Oxford has the support of a number of industry and academic partners who are involved in the UTC in a number of ways:

  • Consultancy and advice on curriculum design and content
  • Employer accreditations
  • Access to selected project information to provide real-life case studies, facilitating project challenges and enhancing the students’ learning experience
  • Coaching and mentoring for staff and students
  • Work experience opportunities
  • Participating in the governance of the UTC
  • Hosting of and participation in student recruitment events
  • Providing equipment for testing and modelling at the school in support of the agreed classroom activity

The UTC Oxford has a truly unique appeal for students interested in Science and Engineering, with specialisms which have been designed by the UTC’s partner companies to be directly relevant to future employment needs, including:

  • Robotics and remote handling – learn how to design, programme and maintain the machines that high-volume manufacturers depend on, manipulating very large or microscopic objects, often working in hazardous environments such as underwater, or in space, or nuclear reactors.

The academy is also the first college in the world to offer education in two specialist technologies which support at least 17% of the UK economy:

  • Vacuum technology, which is essential for space research, semiconductor manufacture and particle physics research
  • Cryogenics – experiments at low-temperature with liquefied gases and down close to absolute zero where some materials become semiconducting or superfluid.
