WMG Academy Solihull

WMG Academy Solihull is a new UTC in Birmingham that opened in September 2016. It is a 14-19 school, sponsored by leading employers in the fields of engineering and science, as well as the University of Warwick. It is the second WMG Academy for Young Engineers to be opened, with the first situated in Coventry.

Alongside core GCSEs and A Levels in subjects such as English, maths and science, students of WMG Academy Solihull can study Level 2 and Level 3 technical qualifications in advanced engineering and science.

The Academy’s employer and university-led curriculum is innovative and engaging. It combines technical, practical and academic learning to provide a rounded education to students, ensuring they leave with the wide range of skills they need to progress to the university of their choice, onto an advanced apprenticeship or straight into full-time employment.

The WMG Academy Solihull supports the development of well qualified and industry trained students, who have the functional skills, knowledge and personal qualities to make an impact in the world of work, as apprentices and/or in further/higher education.

The curriculum is based around projects which have been designed by employers to reflect the types of problems and challenges that employers have to deal with on a day to day basis. The projects are designed to ensure students gain qualifications as they work through the problems that  have been set by the employers.

The projects provide every student with access to high value manufacturing, engineering and design and academic experiences that will lead to a diverse range of positive outcomes – either into employment or on to further or higher education.

Students will learn by doing things, making things, designing things and creating things – just like businesses do every day. Team work will be the norm. In this way, students will be much better prepared for the challenges which follow, whether they be in companies, in further education or at University.

The WMG Academy for Young Engineers (Solihull) has a longer working day, high academic standards and business-led dress code, with expectations are clear to all students who attend the Academy.
