Costain has been improving the lives of people through infrastructure since 1865. The company has built airports, petrochemical plants, waste treatment works and schools. It creates the building blocks of modern life and improves the quality of life of the people who use them.
Costain has constructed several iconic international landmarks, such as the new international airport in Hong Kong. This required shifting the equivalent of 367 Empire State Buildings as part of the earth-moving project. It also required 56,000 tonnes of explosives to level Chek Lap Kok Island.
Costain was also the lead contractor on the iconic Thames Barrier, which has been raised more than 80 times since the 1980s to prevent London being flooded. This innovative flood defence system consumed 51,000 tonnes of structural steelwork and 214,000 cubic metres of concrete. The company was also involved in the construction of the Channel Tunnel and the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, including the revitalisation of St Pancras Station to accept Eurostar trains.
Some of Costain’s more recent projects in the UK include the £400m redevelopment project at London Bridge Station, as well as the HS2 railway line linking London to the East Midlands. Costain is also constructing the 25km Thames Tideway Tunnel which will provide capture, storage and conveyance of almost all the combined raw sewage and rainwater discharges that currently overflow into the River Thames.
Thames Tideway Tunnel:
The River Thames is at the heart of London, but in recent years it has often been overlooked. Costain wants to help change all that. That is why the company is recruiting talented people to help deliver the ambition of re-invigorating a much under-used social, environmental and economic asset.
The Thames Tideway Tunnel is also one of the largest construction projects of its type in Europe. Main construction work on the tunnel started in 2016, but it will take up to seven years to complete. But it’s not just an engineering project, it’s about building a London that meets the needs of generations to come.
At the Greenwich site on Thames Tideway, Apprentices will be part of the team responsible for excavating the shaft and preparation works for the tunnelling phase. This will include the erection of a 17m high, structural steel framed acoustic enclosure that will contain two gantry cranes.
In addition to the Costain Graduate Jobs summarised here, the company also offers a range of Apprenticeships:
