Graduate Jobs with Heathrow

The Heathrow Graduate Jobs programme includes a variety of roles in Engineering across several business functions. There are 76,000 people working across the airport, in thousands of different roles and for hundreds of different companies. Heathrow Airport Limited directly employs 6,500 of them.

Heathrow is the UK’s biggest international airport, from where 80 airlines fly to more than 180 destinations in 84 countries worldwide. And it’s not only passengers. In terms of the value of the goods the airport handles, Heathrow is actually the UK’s largest port. So whether it’s Scottish salmon, British pharmaceuticals or parts for Formula One cars, Heathrow is the gateway to global markets, helping businesses export their goods and services around the world.

Engineering Professional Development Programme

The Heathrow Engineering Teams work across the airport on a huge range of cutting-edge development, construction and maintenance projects. Together, they are responsible for £14bn worth of assets. This includes 4 million square metres of airfield pavements, 180km of airside and landside roads, as well as 33 surface car parks, 50 tunnels and 31 bridges. They are also responsible for the safe management of the largest private water distribution system in Europe.

The Heathrow Engineering Professional Development Programme is a 2 year scheme which prepares high-performing graduates for management roles within engineering and asset management. You will gain exposure to many aspects of work at Heathrow, including airside and landside operations, water management, power generation, terminal operations and rail. There will also be opportunities for you to support highly significant projects and to work alongside and learn from experienced engineers.

After you have completed the programme, the expectation is that you progress to achieve Chartered Engineer status, and, ideally, take a fast-track route into a managerial role.

Future Leaders Graduate Programme

The Heathrow Airport Future Leaders Graduate Programme is an 18-month rotational scheme in which you will complete 3 x 6-month placements. During these placements, you will experience the business from the frontline to the boardroom, acquiring essential leadership, commercial and project management skills. The 3 placements are as follows:

Initial placement
You could be based either in Heathrow’s Terminal Operations, Security, Engineering, Heathrow Express, Airport Operations Centre or Airside teams.

Commercial placement
This will typically be either Retail, VIP or Premium Services, Procurement or Finance, where you will learn the business model behind the various parts of the business.

Tailored placement
Your third and final placement will involve opportunities to hone your project management skills, but the type of role will depend on your personal strengths and preferences.

Upon completion of the 18-month programme, you will have the chance to progress into another area of the business, such as frontline operations, infrastructure development, or one of the Head Office teams.
