IMechE Scholarships

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers offers a comprehensive and diverse range of IMechE Scholarships to both members and non-members. IMechE Scholarships provide practical and financial assistance to enable young students or apprentices to study engineering at university. Furthermore, the IMechE supports great people and great ideas with grants totalling £800,000 each year.

In addition, a number of IMechE scholarships and awards winners are invited to the Vision Awards ceremony held at the Institution’s HQ in London each year. This annual prestigious ceremony is also an excellent networking opportunity and a chance to truly celebrate all the achievements and raise the profile of all the worthy winners.

IMechE has over 120,000 members in 140 countries, and has provided advice and support to the Engineering profession since 1847. Its original 1847 statement of purpose was “To give an impulse to invention likely to be useful to the world”. This is not so different from the organisation’s present mission statement: “Improving the world through engineering”.

The IMechE moved to its current London home at 1 Birdcage Walk in 1899. Here, the organisation cares for rare books and archives relating to the history and development of mechanical engineering.

Engineering Heritage Awards

In addition to the IMechE Scholarships, the organisation launched the Engineering Heritage Awards in 1984. These awards recognise pioneering artefacts, locations, collections and landmarks in engineering. These awards celebrate the contribution of mechanical engineering, to both our past and present. The awards recognising irreplaceable artefacts such as hovercraft, sewage works, railway lines and bombers, to raise public awareness of the vital role mechanical engineering plays in modern life. More than 115 awards have been presented to date, with past winners including the Vickers Wellington Bomber, the Pocket Power Station, and the Beyer Peacock Garratt K1 Locomotive.
