Royal Academy of Engineering Scholarships

There are several Royal Academy of Engineering Scholarships available to provide financial assistance for Undergraduates as well as specific Awards. Royal Academy of Engineering Scholarships provide support for engineering undergraduates in UK universities who have the potential to become leaders in engineering, while acting as role models for future engineers. These scholarships help ambitious and inspiring engineering undergraduates to undertake an accelerated personal development programme.

The Royal Academy of Engineering launched in 1976, the year of Concorde’s first commercial flight. Since then it has continued to champion excellence in all fields of engineering and honoured the UK’s most distinguished engineers. The new Fellowship met for the first time on 11 June 1976 at Buckingham Palace. 130 of the UK’s finest engineers enrolled – people who over the course of their careers had literally changed the world.

Engineers like the jet engine visionary Sir Frank Whittle, design guru Sir Ove Arup, radar pioneer Sir George MacFarlane, bouncing bomb inventor Sir Barnes Wallis, Lord Hinton, who had driven the UK’s supremacy in nuclear power, and Sir Maurice Wilkes, father of the UK computer industry. There were also people who were yet to do their greatest work. For example, Sir Frederick Warner, who led the first international inspection team into Chernobyl after the catastrophic meltdown in 1986.

As the UK’s national academy for engineering, the Royal Academy of Engineering brings together the most successful and talented engineers from across the engineering sectors for a shared purpose: to advance and promote excellence in engineering. In addition, the organisation provides analysis and policy support to promote the UK as a great place to do business. Furthermore, the Academy takes a lead on engineering education and invests in the UK’s world-class research base to underpin innovation.

The Academy works to improve public awareness and understanding of engineering; it is a national academy, but with a global outlook. Various international partnerships also ensure that the UK benefits from international networks, expertise and investment.

Strategic challenges
The Academy’s work programmes for 2015-2020 are driven by four strategic challenges. Each of these provides a key contribution to a strong and vibrant engineering sector, as well as to the health and wealth of society:

1. Make the UK the leading nation for engineering innovation
Supporting the development of successful engineering innovation and businesses in the UK in order to create wealth, employment and benefit for the nation.

2. Address the engineering skills crisis
Meeting the UK’s needs by inspiring a generation of young people from all backgrounds, while also equipping them with the high quality skills they need for a rewarding career in engineering.

3. Position engineering at the heart of society
Improving public awareness and recognition of the crucial role of engineers everywhere.

4. Lead the profession
Harnessing the expertise, energy and capacity of the profession to provide strategic direction for engineering, as well as collaborating on solutions to engineering grand challenges.
