Welbeck College Scholarships

The Welbeck College Scholarships programme provides financial support for students from Welbeck College to study engineering and technical degrees at University. Welbeck College Scholarships are available for students who attend the Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College to study technical A-Levels. Attending the College is the first step on a career path that will lead to a technical or engineering career, either as an officer within one of the armed forces or as a civilian within the Ministry of Defence.

The Defence Technical Officer and Engineer Entry Scheme sees students study technical A levels at Welbeck and then move on to one of 11 partner universities to study engineering and technical degrees with an annual bursary of £4,000. After graduating, students will either start their initial officer training with one of the armed forces or join the MOD Graduate Scheme.

The Welbeck College Scholarships programme has partnerships with 11 Universities all around the UK, including:

  • Aston
  • Birmingham
  • Cambridge
  • Imperial College
  • Loughborough
  • Newcastle
  • Northumbria
  • Oxford
  • Portsmouth
  • Southampton
  • Strathclyde

Your choice of degree will depend on the career path you have chosen to follow with your sponsoring service. All students on the scheme will receive an annual academic bursary of £4,000 which will assist with your fees or living expenses. Students will join a military support unit – a Squadron – while at university. The Squadrons are staffed by members of the armed forces, who mentor and assist your progression through university.

You are expected to attend one training evening a week for which you will receive training pay. The unit provides academic and pastoral support as well as personal development and adventurous training. Work experience is available during the holiday periods and students can earn up to £2,000 per year in training pay for taking part. Students will also need to pass a Personal Fitness Assessment once a year in order to qualify for their bursary.

Following graduation, you will start your training with your sponsoring Service. Those joining the Royal Navy, Army or Royal Air Force will attend initial officer training at Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst or Royal Air Force College, Cranwell respectively. Those following a career with the Defence Engineering and Science Group will join the MOD Graduate Programme. All students receiving assistance must return three years of service on completion of their in-service training.
