Whitworth Scholarships

There are a range of generous Whitworth Scholarships available for both Undergraduates and Postgraduates. Scholarships are designed to promote outstanding engineers and engineering in the UK. The awards are named after Sir Joseph Whitworth, a true visionary who realised the importance of combining both scholarship and practice when he founded the Whitworth Scholarships in 1868. 150 years later, his scheme continues to grow and support talented engineers to fulfil his vision.

The Whitworth Society is a group of professionals that comprises Whitworth Scholars and Whitworth Award Holders of all ages and career stages. The Society promotes engineering in the UK, and brings those who have benefited from Sir Joseph Whitworth’s generosity closer together. The Society was founded in 1923 by Dr H Hele-Shaw, a Whitworth Scholar who was also President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers at the time.

Membership and invitation to the Society’s events is one of the significant benefits of receiving a Scholarship. The Society meets twice a year. The first meeting is a dinner that commemorates the establishment of the Awards. While the second is a two-day summer meeting held in an area of interest that is usually related to the engineering activity of the current President of the Society. This is also often an opportunity to visit places that are inaccessible to the general public.

These meetings, updates and Society communications work together to provide an excellent opportunity to network with Engineers both young and old, across a wide variety of sectors. Although having obvious links to the Whitworth Scholarship Awards scheme, the Whitworth Society is a completely separate entity, run by a committee of volunteers who manage the Society’s activities and membership.

A Whitworth Scholarship is available to outstanding engineers who have excellent academic and practical skills and the qualities needed to succeed in industry. Candidates must be about to start, or have started, an engineering degree-level programme of any engineering discipline. The Whitworth Scholarship Award will not exceed a total of £21,800 for any individual. Candidates can also hold other awards simultaneously, except any other Whitworth Award.

The organisation also offers a Whitworth Senior Scholarship Award for Postgraduate research. These Senior Scholarship Awards offer an enhanced level of financial reward for postgraduate research. The awards are to assist engineers who are intending to do research and are planning to embark on postgraduate degree study for a PhD or EngD degree.

The closing date for applications for all Scholarships is the 30th June each year.
